2010 - 3nd Annual South Okanagan Similkameen Health Fair Awards & Reception
March 5th, 2010 at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre
1. First Nations Champion - Presented by the City of Penticton
Awarded to a company/individual/organization that has developed or introduced a product
or service which enhances the health and fitness of the First Nations of the South
Okanagan Similkameen.
Theresa Gabriel ~ Winner
She is a council member of the Osoyoos Indian Band .Theresa has a strong commitment towards youth empowerment and helping her community living a healthy and active lifestyle. One of the ways she is able to do this is through administering the Education Department for the Osoyoos Indian Band, which is her current, full time position. She also volunteers her time facilitating fitness classes for the community members three times a week and has had a great participation rate.
2. Health & Fitness Educator--Presented by Penticton Herald
Awarded to a company/individual/organization who has provided exemplary on-going
health and fitness education that is enhancing the health and fitness of the citizens of the
South Okanagan Similkameen.
Jorg Mardian ~ Winner
Jorg is a highly knowlegeable and qualified Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer and Holistic Nutritionist that is committed to helping all South Okanagan residents be their healthiest one person and one class at a time. He leads by example and gives 100% of his time and energy to his students and clients 6 days a week. Jorg personally educates over 200 clients in the South Okanagan on a weekly basis. He consistently goes over and above the role of fitness instructor by using his Nutrition training to help his students change their overall health by improving their diet and overall well being. Jorg sends monthly newsletters to each of his students packed full of healthy eating tips, exercise ideas and general facts about fitness and health. He is always willing to stay later after class or communicate with a student to ensure that everyone feels supported and stays on track to achieving their fitness and health goals.
3. Seniors Initiative-- Presented by Janssen-Ortho
Awarded to a company/individual/organization who has developed a program, product or
service e that has enhanced the health and fitness of the senior citizens of the South
Okanagan Similkameen.
Penticton Seniors Drop in Centre ~Inez Storie & Glory Sly & Doreene Rowe ~ Winner
Both Glory & Doreene have volunteered their time for over 8 years here at Penticton Seniors' Drop-In Centre. Glory and Doreen have coordinated a Line Dance class here at our Centre. Inez has been a member of the Drop-In Centre for at least 10 years - and has lead Tai Chi Chuan for just as many. They have spent many hours of their own time preparing for these classes and then coordinating & teaching them.
Volunteers like these three are instrumental in helping Seniors at Penticton Seniors drop in Centre keep active!
4. Youth Initiative Sponsored by Rotary
Awarded to a company/individual/organization who has developed a program, product or
service that has enhanced the health and fitness of the youth of the South Okanagan
Similkameen.
Penticton Indian Band Canoe Journeys -Matt Baran ~ Winner
The Penticton Indian Band Youth Leadership has grown over the past few years and has created healthy environment and lifestyle programs for youth. The members are role models within the Okanagan Nation and they carry their message of positive health and well being to other communities around the world.
Each year the group trains for the 200 kilometer "Canoe Journeys”. Training takes place in the Lower Mainland in 2010 the off-season they participate in dry land training with local RCMP. The group has also worked with The Penticton Indian Band nutritionists to determine the benefits of an active healthy lifestyle.
